DMAR Director, Heather Heuer, Promoted to Vice President of Porchlight

Congratulations to our DMAR Director, Heather Heuer, on her recent promotion to Vice President of Porchlight Real Estate Group. We're excited and proud to have such a successful and dedicated member of the real estate community on our Board of Directors. To highlight the occasion, we decided to ask Heather what this new stage of her career means to her.

DMAR: What is the most exciting part about your new position?

Heather: That I'm a little bit fancier? Actually, the most exciting part is that my company not only has the same values as I do, but they also put forth the time and effort to reward and push harder. PorchLight has a history of being a tech savvy, education-driven, and marketing-focused company; however, only recently have they taken the steps to put themselves into a national spotlight.  Being given the opportunity to be involved in such positive growth is really fun and rewarding.

D: What are three things that you would like to accomplish in your new position?

H: The first item would be to continue to improve and grow our education platform for our agents. We have 41 CE approved hours for our PorchLight agents alone, and four CE instructors on staff. We want our agents to have access to the best and most current industry info that is also meaningful and entertaining. No one likes a boring class! This will include development of our own two-day programs for specific expertise in meaningful areas to our agents.

The second item is to make sure that our Agent Development platform is exceeding industry standards. A leader at PorchLight is not only responsible for file maintenance and general questions, but is really the key to building the confidence levels for all aspects of agents’ careers.  The newer agent needs assistance navigating contracts, clients, and the general world of real estate. The growing agent needs assistance staying on track, and building their business. The established agent needs assistance maintaining and building their future. Each level requires some of the same things, but every individual agent requires special care to feel nurtured and to grow. I want to provide the time, energy, and availability to help them all reach their personal/business goals.

The third item is a little more global. One reason that I chose to become a Director for DMAR is centered around the fact that I didn't know anyone who was serving on the Board. Not knowing the person(s) that were making decisions around my license, and ability to practice real estate, really bothered me. I didn't know if anyone would truly listen to my needs and those around me. DMAR is currently creating an Ambassador program to get more agents involved. If any agent served with PorchLight, DMAR, or outside of our Board, and has a question or a thought that needs an answer, I believe they should have someone that they can ask without feeling ignored or stupid. I want our agent population to know that I really do want to hear what's on your mind and I'll respond. Seriously, try me!

D: What advice would you give someone that is on a path to an upper management position?

H: You can't be afraid to be yourself and it's ok to be annoying to get the answers that you need.  Yes, that sounds corny, but sometimes you have to just start with what you know and it isn't always a lot. Upper management doesn't always mean the corporate suit and tie or endless meetings that go nowhere (but sorry, that part can still happen).  My role allows a lot of flexibility so that I can choose the route I want to take to fulfill my desired end result. If you are within a company that promotes self-starters and rewards both wins and learning opportunities, then it could be worth seeing what else is out there. Join a Board, or get involved in a way that makes you feel fulfilled. If it's right for you, you will start to see gains. Don't wait- tomorrow happens sooner than you expect.

A bit about Heather:

Heather grew up north of Seattle, WA and moved to Denver in 2002 as a General Manager for a restaurant chain. Heather mentioned, “It turns out that I really prefer to eat food rather than manage the people that serve it. So I decided to team up with the REALTOR® that sold my husband and I our first home.”

Heather worked on that team for five years, with an amazing mentor, to whom she owes much of her success.  In 2009, she was recruited by PorchLight, and her business grew to approximately $6M/year.  In October 2012, while expecting her second child, PorchLight's owners, Amy and Carol Bayer, asked Heather to be their Managing Broker upon her return from maternity leave. She happily accepted.

Since October 2012, PorchLight received numerous awards from the Denver Business Journal, Inman and The Denver Post.  Heather was personally nominated on multiple occasions for the 5280 Five Star Agent Award, DMAR Excellence Awards, Top Agent Magazine, and many more. In 2015 Heather became a DMAR Director, representing the Central District, and she was also appointed by the Colorado Real Estate Commission to serve on the Forms Committee. Today Heather serves as Vice President of PorchLight Real Estate Group, focusing on its Education and Managing Broker platforms. Heather also mentioned that: "I am married with a young daughter and son.  I love French fries, but try not to eat too many, and my most favorite award was Class Clown- given to me by the agents and staff at PorchLight."
