Biden Administration Takes Aim at America’s Housing Shortage

The Biden administration on Monday unveiled a plan that calls for legislative and administrative actions to try to close America’s housing shortfall within five years. The plan includes steps to create and preserve hundreds of thousands of affordable housing units in the next three years, including policies aimed at reducing housing costs and ensuring affordability, such as rental assistance and down payment assistance. It also calls for boosting the housing supply by rewarding areas that have reformed their zoning and land-use policies by offering higher scores in certain federal grant processes. Read More

Builders Slow Work on New Homes as Rising Mortgage Rates Temper Demand
Construction of new houses fell slightly in April for the second month in a row, suggesting that rising mortgage rates, record home prices and the high cost of building materials are starting to bite. Housing starts dipped 0.2 % to an annual pace of 1.72 million. That’s how many homes would be built in 2022 if construction took place at same rate over the entire year as it did in April. Economists polled by MarketWatch had expected housing starts to register a 1.75 million rate after adjusting for the typical seasonal swings in demand. Read More

Almost 45% of homeowners are now equity rich

Soaring home prices continue to serve existing homeowners, with nearly 45% of all property owners now considered equity rich, a year-over-year jump that boosted 13% more homeowners into the prime position. A homeowner is considered equity rich when they have at least 50% equity in their home, a feat more easily accomplished when skyrocketing home price appreciation widens the gap between what someone owes on their mortgage and the value of their house. Read More

Mortgage apps decline 11% amid economic uncertainty

Individuals across the country put the American dream of homeownership on standby for the week ending May 13, reducing mortgage application volume by 11% compared to the prior week, as measured by the Mortgage Bankers Association‘s (MBA’s) Market Composite Index. Read More
