RPAC Myths vs. Facts

RPAC is often talked about, but not always fully understood. From how it’s funded to how it supports the real estate industry, there are plenty of misconceptions that can create confusion about what RPAC is and why it matters to Realtors®.

The truth is, RPAC plays a critical role in protecting your business, your clients and the future of real estate at the local, state and national levels. To help cut through the noise, we’re breaking down some of the most common myths about RPAC and sharing the facts every Realtor® should know.

Below, we separate fact from fiction so you can make informed decisions about your involvement and understand how RPAC works on your behalf.

MYTH: RPAC only supports one political party.
FACT: RPAC is bipartisan. It supports candidates – Republicans and Democrats – who support the real estate and housing industry.

MYTH: My membership dues fund political candidates.
FACT: RPAC contributions are 100% voluntary. You have to opt out to not contribute.

MYTH: My contribution won’t make a difference.
FACT: Every dollar counts. RPAC is one of the most influential political action committees in the country, and even small contributions add up to influence issues affecting the real estate industry.

MYTH: RPAC is a lobbying group.
FACT: It’s a political fundraising organization, not a lobbying group. Realtor® members decide how the funds are used for issues that affect the real estate industry and supporting Realtor® party champions for office.

MYTH: Every Realtor® has to contribute to RPAC.
FACT: Giving to RPAC is completely voluntary. We encourage it because it protects your business and your clients, but it’s always your choice.

MYTH: RPAC does not impact my personal business.
FACT: RPAC helps elect candidates who understand and advocate for the real estate industry, protecting your transactions and clients’ right to buy and sell property.

MYTH: RPAC only funds national campaigns.
FACT: Most RPAC dollars stay close to home – 70% of all investments remain in Colorado to support local issues, ballot measures and candidates that directly affect your business.

MYTH: RPAC “buys” political influence.
FACT: RPAC does not buy votes. Period. RPAC follows strict federal, state and local campaign finance laws. It’s about advocacy, not favoritism.

MYTH: I don’t need RPAC, I can just talk to my elected officials myself.
FACT: You should speak to elected officials directly, but your voice is stronger when joined with thousands of others. RPAC pools your investment with your peers’ to make sure the Realtor® voice is heard, loudly and effectively.
